William T. Patterson

Born August 20, 1920 in Scranton, he was the son of the late Thomas and Sadie (Brady) Patterson. Bill was a Navy veteran serving during World War II. Before his retirement, he was employed in management at the Manhattan Shirt Company in Scranton.
Bill was a lifelong member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Scranton, a member of the church Vestry and served the church as junior and senior warden. Bill and his wife were longtime volunteers with the Moses Taylor Hospital Auxiliary.
Surviving are his nieces, Mildred Altomare of Allentown, Marilyn Pyle of Philadelphia, Karen Trethaway of Kingston and Linda Voight – Yuan of New Jersey; his nephew Robert Conrad of Lakeland, Fla.; and several great-nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Conrad.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated:
Friday, July 14, 2017, at 11 a.m. in the Church of the Good Shepherd N. Washington Avenue and Electric Street, Scranton.
Interment with military honors will be conducted at Dunmore Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 10:30 until time of the service.

Born Nov. 25, 1966 in Scranton, she was the daughter of June Morgan and the late Joseph Morgan. Brenda was educated at Northwest High School. Brenda was a dedicated homemaker and loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister. She was an avid “Snoopy” fan and will be dearly missed.
In addition to her husband, surviving are her children, Christopher and wife, Lacey, Olyphant; John and wife, Ashley, Blakely; and Heather and husband, Erich, Hawley; two sisters, Cara Slocum and husband, Roy, Justus; and Dawn Morgan, Waymart; nine grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Born July 27, 1934 in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Ervin and Pauline (Fabri) Hoffman. She was a 1952 graduate of Scranton Central High School and has resided in Covington Twp. since 1970. Marilyn was a member of the Daleville United Methodist Church. Before retirement, she was employed by Covington Twp. and Bill’s ShopRite. In her earlier years, she was employed by the International Salt Company.
Surviving are her son, Brian F. Toy and wife, Dawn, Covington Twp.; her grandchildren, Christen Brandt, Brooklyn; and Kevin Toy, Covington Twp.; her stepson, Arthur W. Toy Jr. and wife, Sandra, Salem Twp.; her brother-in-law, William Muscosky, Moscow; and nieces and nephews.
Marilyn was also preceded in death by her twin sister, Marlene Muscosky, on May 30, 2013.

Barry E. Semon, Sr.

Barry E. Semon Sr., 83, of Scranton died Wednesday morning at Abington Manor in South Abington Twp., following an illness. He was preceded in death by his wife the former Dolores Fletcher.
Born March 10, 1934 in Scranton, he was the son of the late Albert and Elizabeth (Dennis) Semon. He was a Marine Corps veteran serving three years active duty and five years inactive duty. He served with the 2nd Marine Division, anti tank company.
Before his retirement, he was owner and operator of Barry’s Sunoco Service Station in the Green Ridge section of Scranton for 47 years. Barry was a longtime member and trustee of the former Providence United Methodist Church. In addition to being on the board of Trustees and administrative council. He served as a Sunday School teacher, and Lay Minister. He was member and Past Master of the Green Ridge Lodge and was a member of the Irem Temple Consistory and the Motorcycle Drill Team. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and the Black Sheep Squad Model Airplane Club. Barry was honored several times by the Green Ridge Beautification Committee for his beautiful business property. He was an avid camper and traveler. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Surviving are his daughter Lisa A. Murphy of Dunmore; his son, Barry E. Semon Jr. and wife Deborah of Norristown; his sister, Shirley Reilly of Chinchilla; his grandchildren, Kevin Murphy II, Erin Regan, Katelyn Murphy, Heather Rorick, Brandon Semon, Nicholas Semon, Jocalyn Semon and Victoria Semon; his great-grandchildren, Reilly, Elizabeth, Emma and Bria. He also is survived by his companion of 20 years, Carol Burnett.
He was preceded in death by his son Brian E. Semon and twin infants Gary and Karen; his sisters, Charlotte, Elizabeth, and Edith; and his brothers Elwood and Maynard.

Vincent S. “Vince” Yacko, Covington Twp., died Sunday at Regional Hospital of Scranton after being stricken ill at his home. His wife is the former Patricia “Trish” McNiff.
Born Sept. 3, 1943 in Yonkers, N.Y., son of the late Andrew and Anna Yacko, Vince was an Army veteran serving as a medical corpsman during the Vietnam War. Before his retirement, Vince was employed as a general contractor in the construction industry. He was of the Roman Catholic faith.
Also surviving are his daughter, Jennifer Wagner and husband, Michael, West Chester; son, William Baron and wife, Christine; grandchildren, Mikayla, Dominic, Chase and Julianna; sister, Elenore Yacko, New York; and nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his granddaughter, Sloane; and siblings.

Tina M. Elston-Benzeleski, 44, of Mount Cobb, passed away at her home Wednesday. She had suffered from a cocooned gut rotation syndrome.
Born March 6, 1973, in Scranton, she was the daughter of William and Jean (Butler) Elston.
Surviving in addition to her parents is her husband, Jamison Benzeleski; her sons, Jamison, Jacob and Zachary; her father-in-law, John Benzeleski; and mother-in-law, Donna Mill; her sisters, Debbie, Cindy and Bonnie; and her brother, Willie; many in-laws; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kaitlin Elston, on April 13.

Ruth Thoman, 98, a guest at St. Mary’s Villa NursingCenter and formerly of Moscow died Wednesday morning at Moses Taylor Hospital following a brief illness. She is the widow of Herman Thoman who died in 2003.
Born Nov. 14, 1918 in Taylor, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Howard and Susan (Merritt) Tidd. Ruth attended the Moscow United Methodist Church. Ruth loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren very dearly. They were the light of her life, and kept her young at heart.
Surviving is her son Ronald Thoman and wife Kay of Moscow; her grandsons, Ronald Thoman Jr. and wife Michelle, Robert Thoman and wife Terry, and Gary Thoman and wife Jill; seven great- grandchildren: Christina Hinz and husband Henry, Heather, Ronnie, Clelsea, Gary Jr., Alexandra, and Cailie; and two great-great-grandchildren: Hailey and Henry Hinz; her nieces: Susan McGrath and husband Michael, Virginia Jones and husband Robert, Jennifer Mitchko and husband Michael and Rebecca Mitzkiel.
Ruth was preceded in death by her brother Harold Tidd.

Christopher Henry “Chris” Fazen, 58, of Spring Brook Twp., Aston Mountain, died Monday at his home after an extended illness. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carole DeMarco Fazen, on March 21.
Born April 22, 1959 in Philadelphia, son of the late Gustave and Helena Madzelewska Fazen, he attended St. Ambrose School in Philadelphia and was a graduate of North Pocono High School. Before his illness, Chris was employed in sales with Flowserve Corp.
He was an avid fan of the Eagles and Phillies, sharing his passion for sports with many family and friends. He enjoyed softball and golf, as well as creating masterful woodworking projects out of his garage. He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Moscow.
Surviving are his children, Sara Fazen and companion, Tyler Long; and Christopher H. Fazen Jr. and wife, Debbie, Princeton, N.J.; sister, Barbara Fazen-Verrastro and husband, Pat, Moscow; granddaughter, Mia Angelina Fazen; nephew, L.T. Verrastro, Los Angeles; niece, Nika Verrastro, Moscow; his mother-in-law, Joan DeMarco, Spring Brook Twp.; and numerous friends.

William F. Olson Jr., 61, of Factoryville, died May 30 at his home following an illness.
Born Feb. 27, 1956, in Scranton, son of the late William and Jeanette (Wilson) Marionni Olson, he received his associate’s degree in 1977 from Keystone Junior College, a bachelor’s degree in biology from Slippery Rock University in 1979 and studied plant biology and ecology at Rutgers University in 1998. He was currently an adjunct instructor in the biology department of Keystone College.
William was an avid advocate for protecting the environment. He worked in New Jersey and Pennsylvania for more than 25 years as a botanist and biologist.
Surviving are his brother, Edward Marionni and wife, Sheryl, Dalton; nephew, Christopher Marionni and wife, Joom, Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic; his niece, Elizabeth Musso and husband, Christopher, Clarks Summit; and two great-nieces, Sienna and Avery.

Nancy T. Gavern, 78, of Scranton died Thursday morning at Allied Skilled Nursing in Scranton following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Born May 29, 1939 in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Irving and Hilda (Thompson) Goodall. Prior to her retirement, Nancy was employed as a Medical Transcriptionist at Moses Taylor Hospital and Community Medical Center. Nancy was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Scranton.
Surviving are her children: Virginia “Ginger” Wehrkamp and husband Gary of Stroudsburg, Robert J. Gavern Jr. and wife Jeanne of Scranton, and Jeffrey Gavern and wife Kristen of St. Pete Beach, FL; her sister Betsy Lavelle and husband Bill of Throop; her brothers Irving Goodall Jr. of Warrensburg, MO, and Gary Goodall and wife Anne of Old Forge; her grandsons: Anthony Martinelli, Matthew Gavern, Jacob Gavern, Austin Gavern, Ian Gavern, and Gabriel Wehrkamp.
In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her brother Douglas Goodall in 2013 and her sister Roberta J. Goodall in 2014.

Gary J. Lesh, 74, of Pocono Pines, died peacefully Saturday at his home.
Born June 23, 1942, in Moscow, Pa., he was the son of the late William A. and Mary (Petrick) Lesh. He was a Navy veteran serving on the USS Forrestal (CVA-59). Gary was employed as a carpenter, and prior to his retirement was employed by S & H Construction of Gouldsboro, Pa.
Surviving are his children, Barbara Wieand and husband, Kevin, of Blakeslee; Carol Gress and husband, Barry, of Drums; Shirley Archer and husband, Joseph, of Moscow; Kevin Gress and wife, Tina, of Lake Ariel; his sister, Lucille Newhart, of Missoula, Mont.; eight grandchildren, Amanda, Kevin, Tyler, Michaela, Stephanie, Joey, Brandy and Jess; and four great-grandchildren, Falon, Logan, Brody and Bryson; and nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Carole Gress; and his wife, Carol (Chesik) Lesh.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Bridget Lesh; son, Ronald Gress; granddaughter, Abigail Paige; his sisters, Ruth Ames and Jane Newhart; and his brothers, William A. Lesh Jr. and John “Jack” Lesh.
Gary was an avid Yankees fan, and had great love and affection for all the “short people” (grandchildren) in his life. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Darrin Timothy Robert Taylor, 23, of Scranton died Friday, May 19, 2017.
Born July 24, 1993 in Livingston, N.J., he is the son of Theresa Alverio of Scranton and Darrin Taylor of Peru. He was employed in the construction field.
Surviving are his brothers Ian Taylor of Kunkletown, and Ryan Taylor of Scranton; step-brothers and sisters, Tiffany Camacho and Andrew Camacho, Ramon Alverio, Ryan Alverio, Ariane Taylor and Jesse Taylor; his grandparents, Eugene and Patricia Cronin, and Robert Taylor. He is also survived by his children.
Darrin was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Marilyn Taylor.

Ronald M. Broad, Dickson City, died Tuesday morning at the Lackawanna Health and Rehab Center in Olyphant after an illness. His wife is the former Dorothy A. Wansacz.
Born in Dickson City, son of the late Matthew and Mildred Krieger Broad, Ronald was a graduate of Dickson City High School. He served four years in the Air Force and was a member of the Dickson City Primitive Methodist Church. Before his retirement, he was employed in the security division at the Tobyhanna Army Depot.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to the nurses, aides and recreational staff of floor B1 for their compassionate and loving care during the time he was a resident at the Lackawanna. They are truly the best.
Also surviving are two sons, Gary Broad and wife, Lori, Olyphant; and Duane Broad, Dickson City; daughter, Laura Broad, Dickson City; sister, Violet Marchand, Stratford, Conn.; several nephews and cousins.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Lillian Wilton and Emily Clark; and a daughter-in-law, Consilia Minicozzi Broad.

Sylvia A. Hatfield, 98, of Scranton died Saturday at the Jewish Home of Eastern Pa. following an illness. She was the widow of Harold Hatfield, who died in 1984.
Born in South Amboy, N.J., she was the daughter of the late John Francis and Augusta “Gussie”( Fry) Paris. Sylvia moved to Scranton when she was 2 years old, grew up in the family homestead, and has resided there for 96 years. She worked as a dental technician for Leventhal Dental Laboratory for 40 years. Sylvia was a longtime member of Court Street United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters Mary and Mildred, and her brother, Fred.

Nancy R. Ratchford, 82, of Scranton, died Wednesday at Regional Hospital of Scranton following an illness. She was the widow of Paul M. Ratchford, who died July 13, 2010.
Born May 22, 1934, in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Beatrice (Ware) Smith. Nancy was a member of Mary, Mother of God Parish in Scranton. Nancy enjoyed singing and writing music, and had an impressive talent for playing the piano. Although being unable to read a single note of music, she had the natural ability of listening to the music and memorizing the keys. Nancy’s passions included her love for poetry and her unique ability to create poems that spoke and resonated with all who had the pleasure of reading them. Another hobby was her love for antiques, in which she attended flea markets and yard sales in search of treasures that she believed were one of a kind.
The most important aspect of Nancy’s life was the love she felt for her family. She had a special relationship with each of her children, and a love for her grandchildren that was incomparable.
Surviving are her daughters, Amy Cole and husband Roy, of Scranton, Margaret “Peggy” Voldenberg and Michael Voldenberg, of Scranton, and Michelle Bloom and husband, Kevin, of Scranton; her son, Paul M. Ratchford Jr., of Sandy Ridge, N.C.; her sister, Lillian Woempner, of Caspian, Mich.; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Nancy was preceded in death by her siblings Tom, Sally, Emily and Caroline.
A Mass will be celebrated:
Tuesday at 9:30 am in Mary, Mother of God Parish 316 William St., Scranton.
Interment will be conducted privately by Nancy’s family.

It is with a heavy heart that the family of beloved mother, grandmother, and friend — Nancy Ann (née Grady) McAleese — announces her passing, on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at the age of 82. Nancy, a longtime resident of Clarks Summit, passed away peacefully at St. Mary’s Villa Nursing Home following a brief illness. She was the widow of Mark. D. McAleese who preceded her in death in 2005.
Born July 10, 1934, this native New Yorker was the daughter of the late Walter and Alma (née Pagel) Grady. She graduated from St. Michael’s High School in New York, N.Y., and continued her education with the Presentation Sisters with whom she maintained close ties throughout her life as a devout Catholic. She and her husband Mark moved to Clarks Summit in 1980 where she dedicated herself as a doting housewife who was deeply involved in her children’s and grandchildren’s activities. No family event was complete without Nancy’s touch. Nancy was the glue that kept the family healthy and happy. Her most cherished memories included being surrounded by the laughter and light of the the children and grandchildren she adored the most. In addition to her family, Nancy made many friends over the years and was proudly devoted to her faith as a member of Our Lady of the Snows/Church of St. Benedict, Clarks Summit, PA.
As an avid traveler, Nancy loved to see the world, whether it was a cruise or air travel, this is what she enjoyed the most and after the passing of Mark, she continued her travels with her brother Jack. Her brother was the light of her life. There was never a day that would go by that he didn’t call to check in on her. Nancy was a real lifetime New Yorker and loved her New York Rangers. She enjoyed shopping and was always out on some sort of mission, to find something for one of the grandchildren or to redecorate one of the rooms in her home. She enjoyed her visits to see the horses run, especially her trip to the Kentucky Derby with her granddaughter Michele or to Saratoga Springs. She also enjoyed her visits to the casino, which she was usually the winner.

Kathryn Field, 96, of Moscow, passed away Tuesday morning at Geisinger Community Medical Center. She was a resident of St. Mary’s Villa Nursing Home since July of 2016. She was the widow of Dorrance “Jiggs” Field, who died Aug. 11, 1999.
Born in Moscow, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Kolb) Van Brunt. Kathryn was a graduate of Moscow High School and the Lackawanna Business College. Kathryn was a lifelong member of the Moscow United Methodist Church. Before her retirement, Kathryn was employed by the North Pocono School District. She loved plants, gardening and enjoyed traveling. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Surviving is her daughter, Mary Davis and husband, Bob, of Scranton.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Barbara Field; and her son, Dorrance “Butch” Field.

Danielle C. Vinson, 33, of Scranton, died unexpectedly on Saturday April 15th.Born July 20, 1983 in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter Robert Luke and the late Susan Burger. Her fiancee is Kenneth C. Stackhouse of Lake Ariel, PA.
In addition to her fiancee, Danielle is survived her brothers, Kane Vinson and wife Kathleen of Brooklyn, N.Y., and James and Ryan Luke.
Danielle was preceded in death by a son, Damien Vinson on Sept. 6, 2015.

Lewis Scott Kramer of Elmhurst Twp. passed away April 17, 2017 at Hospice of the Sacred Heart. He was born March 20, 1959 to the late Warren Sr. and Beverly (Lewis) Kramer of Elmhurst.
Scott graduated from North Pocono High School in 1977 and went on to obtain an associate’s degree in business from Lackawanna College. He worked at Penthouse Meat Company and Maid Rite Steak Company. He was a lifetime member of the Elmhurst Roaring Brook Volunteer Fire Company and a lifelong member of the Elmhurst Presbyterian Church.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing with his dog Bentley, serving his community, photography, playing practical jokes, fishing and other outdoor activities. He will be remembered for his community service, sense of humor and courageous spirit.
Scott is lived on by his wife, Glenda Kramer; daughters, Peggy; and Kim and her fiancé, Garrett; brother, Warren and his wife, Robin; sister-in-law, Karen; and many nieces and nephews; along with several other family and friends.
The family will receive relatives and friends:

James F. Prendergast, 80, of Scranton died Saturday at home, under the care of Compassionate Care Hospice. His wife is the former Catherine E. Anderson. They were married Feb. 21, 1970.
Born Feb. 22, 1937, in Scranton, son of the late Thomas and Anna (Healey) Prendergast, he was educated in the Scranton schools, and was an Army veteran. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. Before his retirement, he was employed by J. F. Sportswear. He was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Parish in Scranton.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his daughters, Erin Keiper and partner, Dean Martin, Taylor; Nancy Prendergast and fiancé, James Owens, Scranton; four grandchildren, Justin Keiper, Taylor Keiper, Dean “Dino” Martin Jr. and Cailyn Owens; and two stepgranddaughters, Hailey Owens and Elizabeth Martin; seven sisters, Rose Zielinski, Joan Lescinsky and husband, William; Mary Flis and husband, John; Ann Sherman and husband, David; Romayne, Paula and Cynthia Prendergast; six brothers, Thomas, Stephen, Francis, John, Edward and wife, Ann; and Robert and wife, Pam Prendergast; and several nieces and nephews.
James was also preceded in death by two sisters, Jean Rupinski and Sharon Prendergast; and three brothers, Patrick, Michael and Gerald Prendergast.

Kaitlin Marie Elston, 22, of Mount Cobb, passed away at Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia. She had fought a good fight against Cystic Fibrosis.
Kaitlin was a 2013 graduate of North Pocono High School and a 2015 graduate of Jolie Academy for nursing.
She is survived by her mother, Tina Elston-Benzeleski; her father, Jamison Benzeleski; her three brothers, Jamison, Jacob and Zachary; grandparents, William and Jean Elston; John Benzeleski and Donna Mill; an aunt, Bonnie; and many other aunts, uncles and cousins.

Joan Stevens, North Scranton, died Tuesday in the emergency room of Regional Hospital of Scranton.
Daughter of the late William and Alice Clarke Stevens, she was a 1971 graduate of Scranton Technical High School. After graduation, she was employed at International Correspondence Schools in Scranton, where she participated in their softball and bowling leagues.
Joan was a member of the Polish Club and VFW Post 25, where she served as chaplain and secretary of the Ladies Auxiliary. She always volunteered for holiday parties, benefits and all other events helping children and families. Joan was a kind and loyal person who was known for doing anything for her friends, including delivering food and driving them to appointments.
She is survived by eight brothers and sisters: her identical twin, June Schofield; Bill Stevens, AliceMarie Keisling, Carol Zarcone, Linda Jenkins, Frank, Paul and Jim Stevens; her brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and an aunt.
She was also preceded in death by her sister, MaryAnn Stevens, on April 11, 2015; her brother, Johnny Stevens, on July 12, 2014; brother-in-law, Gary Keisling; and her aunt, Mary Klem.
In honoring Joan’s wishes, there will be no calling hours.
Graveside services will be conducted at a time to be announced.

Born May 1, 1934 in Archbald, son of the late Thomas and Angeline Jardine Esgro, Dominick was an Air Force veteran and had a long career as an accountant with IBM and Lockheed Martin. He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church, Moscow.
He is survived by his loving family.

Joseph G. O’Connell of Thornhurst, Pa., died Saturday, April 1 at the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center Hospice.
Born Aug. 9, 1943 in New York City, N.Y., Joe was the son of the late Marian (nee Grab) and Maurice O’Connell and was the grandson of Anastasia and Joseph Grab. Joe was educated in New York and served in the Navy as a Chinese and Japanese communications specialist during the Vietnam War. After leaving the military, Joe graduated from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. In the following years, Joe continued to utilize his Chinese and Japanese linguistic skills working for several Far East shipping companies in New York, New Jersey, Florida and Virginia.
In 1978, Joe answered a ministerial calling and moved to North Carolina to complete a Masters in Divinity with languages at Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest. As an ordained Southern Baptist minister, Joe served in several parishes in New Jersey and Virginia. Retiring and moving to Pennsylvania, Joe continued his pastoral work and served as Thornhurst Fire Department chaplain. Joe also shared his love of languages as a Latin teacher at Notre Dame High School, East Stroudsburg and more recently as a substitute teacher at Holy Cross High School in Dunmore.
Joe is survived by four children, Maurice Ian O’Connell, of Seminole Fla.; Alana Johnson, of Beaufort, N.C.; Christopher O’Connell, of Raleigh, N.C.; and Kathleen O’Connell, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; his brother, John O’Connell, of Boothbay Harbor, Maine; and sister, Clare O’Connell, of Hopewell Junction, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Andre and Desiree; two nieces, a nephew, two grandnieces and two grandnephews; and numerous Grab family members here in Pennsylvania and throughout the U.S.

Marissa had touched everybody in a great way throughout her short, yet very memorable life. Born April 8, 1942 in Waterbury, Conn., she was employed as a nurse’s aide at various hospitals in Connecticut before retirement.
Catherine was a member of the Crossroad Assembly of God.

Born March 20, 1963, in Scranton, he was the son of the late Henry Krupski and Bernadette Pavlowski. Eric was an avid cigar connoisseur, and enjoyed his friends and family very much. Eric was employed by D. G. Nicholas Co. and Pachter Auto Supply in the customer service department for many years.

Robert R. Swaha, 70, of Olyphant, died Monday at the Lackawanna Health and Rehab center after an illness. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Rodney.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Fred and Arlene Detrick Swaha, he was educated in Scranton schools and was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the army. He was employed by Booth and Son’s scrap yard until his retirement in 2006.
Surviving are two daughters, Dorothy Loney and husband, William, Scranton; and Jackie Laytos and husband, Ed, Factoryville; a son, Robert Swaha Jr., Carbondale; two sisters, Sharon Johnson, Scranton; and Bonnie Goscinski, Scranton; one brother, Fred Swaha Jr., Scranton; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Robert loved his grandchildren dearly. Tiffany Loney was his pride and joy. She was there in his later years to care for all of his needs.
He was preceded in death by a brother, James Swaha; and a sister, Doreen.

| Jean Marie Palmer Ross of Chiefland, FL died Sunday, March 5, 2017 after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert H,. Ross, who died in 1991.Jean was born in Dunmore, PA, daughter of the late Dudley and Ursula Palmer of Moscow, PA, and granddaughter of the late James and Lou Palmer; founders of the Palmer Transfer Co., Scranton. She often recalled many happy days with her brothers and sisters while growing up in the Dunmore area and enjoyed an early singing career on major radio networks in the Scranton and Philadelphia regions before eventually moving to Moscow.In 1966 the Ross family relocated to New Port Richey, FL. There she pursued a career in Fashion Merchandising with Bealls Department Stores. In later years, Jean also embarked upon a successful career as a manager of an exclusive seafood restaurant before retiring and moving to the Chiefland, FL area to be close to her son and his famly. There she was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church for over 30 years. Following her husbands death, Jean’s new career became travelling. Her fondest adventures include: touring the Vatican and the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, hiking the Swiss Alps, touring on the Euro Train and a three week road trip through the hills of Ireland with her daughters. Her stateside travel adventures included summers spent in Georgia, road trips up the Eastern Seaboard to the Pocono Mountains and numerous California coastline excursions. Jean witnessed the sunrise on the edge of a Hawaiian volcano crater and the setting sun over the waters of the Bahamas. But the greatest sources of enjoyment, other than shopping, were her grandchildren who made her days happy. Jean is survived by three children, Mrs. Kathleen Diggs of Covington, GA, Mrs. Jean Sinclair of Burbank, CA and Mr. Bobby Ross of Chiefland FL., along with a sister, Mrs. Ann Palmer Schwartz of Springbrook, PA and a brother, James Palmer of Moscow, PA. She has eight grandchildren, five great granchuildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother Frank Palmer and sister Mary Faith Wombacker Ries of Moscow, PA. Born Dec. 13, 1940, in Scranton, he was the son of the late William and Anne Price. David was an Army veteran, serving with the Army Reserves. He was a long time member of St. Rita’s Church in Gouldsboro, and served as an usher for many years. Before his retirement, David was employed at the Tobyhanna Army Depot as a welding supervisor.

Born Dec. 5, 1947, in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Earle and Ruth (Devereaux) Lowndes. Before her retirement, she was employed as a bookkeeper for the Scranton News Co. Roberta was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Scranton.
Surviving in addition to her husband are her son, Jason A. Kennedy, of Dunmore; her sister, Suzanne L. Chimel and husband, Robert G. Chimel, of Clarks Summit; her brother, Jeffrey S. Lowndes, of Scranton; two nephews, Steven R. Chimel, of Dunmore; and William D. Chimel, of Naples, Fla.
Roberta was also preceded in death by her first husband, John Alexander Kennedy, in 1984.

John Harle, 84, of Scranton, died Monday.
Born Dec. 2, 1932, in Scranton, he was the son of the late Charles and Elizabeth (Gilley) Harle. John was educated in the Scranton schools and was a Marine Corps veteran serving in Korea during the Korean Conflict. Before his retirement, John was employed by Lugar Electrical of Scranton.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Minnie Bennie and Marian Harle; and his brothers, George, Harry, Frederick, Robert, James and Charles Harle.
Graveside services with full military honors will be held privately at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
Helen Klimach

Helen Klimach, 94, of Scranton, died Sunday evening at her home. She is the widow of Edwin Klimach, who died Nov. 12, 1978.Born Feb. 3, 1923, in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Julius and Christina (Morris) Snyder. She was educated in the Scranton schools, and was raised in the Lutheran faith.
Helen was a wonderful gardener, enjoying the many flowers she grew. She was also an avid walker, especially walking at the Viewmont Mall, with breakfast to follow at the Viewmont Diner. She was very fond of “gummy bears.”
Surviving are her daughters, Carol A. Fritch and husband, John, of Scranton; and Barbara J. Chesk and husband, Frank, of Endicott, N.Y.; four grandchildren, John Fritch and wife, Kathleen; Noelle E. Marchese and husband, James; Keith Chesk and Keri Liburdi and husband, Robert; three great-grandchildren, Kelsie, Daniel, David; and nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Ann Sack and Lydia DeCola; and her brothers, John, Julius, Richard and Leonard Snyder.
Funeral services will be held:
Thursday at noon in the Howard J. Snowdon Funeral Home, 1810 Sanderson Ave., Scranton, with the Rev. Arthur W. Davis as officiating clergy.

Paul J. Pragier

Paul J. Pragier died on Feb. 1, 2017 due to natural causes.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Taran; stepdaughter, Ewelina Taran and family in Poland; daughter, Katarzyna Pragier; brother, Piotr Pragier; and sister, Ewa Tomaszewska.
Paul was a truck driver, which allowed him to focus on his love of travel. He found his way to the U.S. in 1987, after seeking asylum. Paul was very involved with the Polish organizations in New Jersey, which promoted the Polish heritage in the U.S. He enjoyed reading about history and politics, and listening to music. Through various life experiences, Paul became a mentor to many as they often sought out his wisdom.

Ardeth M. Fischetti

Ardeth M. Fischetti, Archbald, and formerly of Moscow, died Sunday at Regional Hospital of Scranton after a brief illness. Her husband of 42 years is Patrick F. Fischetti.
Born Dec. 18, 1931 in Scranton, daughter of the late John and Anna Savage Mentz, she was a 1949 graduate of Scranton Technical High School and a graduate of the University of Scranton, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in accounting.
Before her retirement in 2011, Ardeth was employed for many years by Snowdon Funeral Homes of Scranton and Moscow. Ardeth was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Scranton, serving her Lord and her church in many extraordinary ways. She was a member of the church’s ladies aide, the Braille workers, the church choir, a board member of the Sunday School and Evergreen Cemetery. Ardeth was active with the Immanuel Lutheran Pre-School and a valued member of the Lutheran Missionary Women’s League.
Ardeth was an avid golfer, and a member and former ladies golf champion at Elmhurst Country Club. She enjoyed skiing in her earlier days, especially her trips to the western United States.
Also surviving are her niece and nephew; her beloved cousins; a great-nephew; great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and many wonderful friends.
She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Aileen Graff, Audrey Micks and Anne Mentz; her niece, Linda Whitney; and her nephew, Kenneth Micks, in 2016.
A memorial service will be:
Saturday at noon in Immanuel Lutheran Church, 238 Reese St., Scranton, with the Rev. John Zimmerman, pastor, as officiating clergy.
A private committal will be conducted at Evergreen Cemetery, Dickson City.

John R. Anderson

John R. Anderson, 74, of Scranton, died Sunday at his home following a lengthy illness. His wife is the former Grace L. Grande. The couple celebrated 49 years of marriage on May 20, 2016.
Born June 1, 1942, in Scranton, he was the son of the late Russell and MaryAnn (Fitzgerald) Anderson. He was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and was an Army veteran serving in the Vietnam War. Before his retirement, he was employed by Penn Security Bank, and was previously employed by Sandvik Steel Corporation.
John was a member of St. Paul’s Parish in Scranton, and was a devoted sports fan. John was a loving husband, father and brother, and will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.
John’s family would like to extend thanks to Dr. Carl Barsigian and his nurses and staff, his visiting nurses, Brenda, Debbie, Kim, Mary, Chrissy and Sue and the Compassionate Care Hospice for their outstanding care.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his son, Brian J. Anderson and wife, Diane, of Fleetville; his daughter, Denise M. Frederickson and husband, Richard, of Scranton; two sisters, Catherine Prendergast and husband, James, of Scranton; and Jessie Kolatis and husband, Philip, of Scranton; nieces and nephews; and his granddogs, Zeus, Kodi and Skye.

Born Dec. 28, 1964, in Scranton, she is the daughter of Harriet E. (Moore) Janus, of Moscow, and the late Thomas Janus. Joy was previously employed at the Tobyhanna Army Depot.
Surviving in addition to her mother are her daughters, Tara T. Janus, of Moscow; Jessica A. Leonard, of Old Forge; Kimberly L. Robinson, of Sugarloaf; and Amber L. Robinson, of Hazleton; two sisters, Trudy M. Maurer, of Moscow; and Grace L. Slivkanich, of Mt. Cobb; her brother, Ray Moore, of Virginia Beach, Va.; 11 grandchildren; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Margaret “Peg” Collins, 83, of Jefferson Twp., passed away Friday morning at her home.
Born Dec. 13, 1933, in Covington Twp., she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Ann (Ulkoski) Acker. She graduated from Jefferson Twp. High School, and was proud to be valedictorian of her class. Before her retirement, she was employed at the Tobyhanna Army Depot as an electronics repair specialist, and was held in high regard by all her coworkers.
Peg could not go anywhere without running into a friend. Peg was an active member of Light of Christ Church in Jefferson Twp., and was much beloved by her church family. She was a selfless lady, always putting her family and friends first. Her energy was boundless and she spread light and joy everywhere. She loved unconditionally. Peg was dearly loved by everyone who knew her and will be missed every minute of every day. “Grammy,” will be in our hearts forever.
She is survived by her daughter, Cindy L. Collins and spouse, Bruce Whitehead, of Jefferson Twp.; her son, Gary W. Collins, of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; granddaughters, Kristin VanOsterom and husband, Matt, of Las Vegas, Nev.; and Loryn Register and husband, Lane, of Clermont, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Connor and Madison VanOsterom; and brother, Ken Acker and wife, Diane, of Jefferson Twp. She is also survived by her companion of 30 years, Norman York; and her former spouse, Gerald Collins. She will be greatly missed by her granddoggy, “Pebbles.”

Andrew P. “Andy” Zarcone, 62, of Scranton, died Jan. 10 at his home.
Born April 5, 1954, in Scranton, he was the son of the late Joseph A. and Angeline (Consagra) Zarcone. He was educated in the Scranton schools, and was a member of St. Peter’s Cathedral Parish and a former member of St. Paul’s Parish in Scranton. Before retirement, Andy was employed by Supermarket Services of Dunmore.
Surviving are his brother, Joseph J. Zarcone and wife, Carol, of Clarks Summit; a niece and a nephew; cousins; and friends.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated:
Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Chapel on the University of Scranton’s campus.
Interment and committal was held privately at Fairview Memorial Park.

Michael Gianoni, 53, of Scranton, died Tuesday from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Interstate 84 in Roaring Brook Twp.
Born Sept. 15, 1963 in Scranton, son of Angelo and Margaret Hoar Gianoni, Madison Twp. Michael was a 1981 graduate of North Pocono High School and was owner and operator of Independent Electrical Associates of Scranton.
Michael was a member of Mary, Mother of God Parish in Scranton and a former member of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Moscow. He was a member of the Moscow Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Company for many years.
Michael will be remembered for his selflessness, generosity, humor and devotion to family and friends. He had a magnetic personality and was an animated storyteller.He was an avid cyclist and loved ballroom dancing. Michael had a passion for politics and loved his country. He performed many unseen and unknown acts of kindness and charity. He will be forever missed.
Also surviving are his sisters, Kara T. Beviglia and husband, Robert, Madison Twp.; and Gina Buczek and husband, Dr. Ronald Buczek, Woodlands, Texas; brother, Joseph C. Gianoni and wife, Lynne, Quakertown; six nieces and nephews, Emily, Ryan, Hailey, Kevin Gianoni, and Gina and Mia Beviglia; aunts, uncles and cousins; and his very special friend, Oksana Dekalchuk.

Beverly A. Cottrell of Pittston Twp. died Wednesday morning at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center following an illness. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Willard E. “Red” Cottrell.
Born Nov. 17, 1943, in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Howard S. and Susanna A. (Hoagland) Green. She was educated in Scranton schools, and before her retirement was employed by Nationwide Casket Co. She was a member of the the Asbury United Methodist Church and the Wyoming United Methodist Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband are her daughters, Susanna I. Cottrell, of Pittston Twp.; Beverly A. Setzer, of Scranton; her sons, Willard E. Cottrell III, of Plymouth; Louis Cottrell and wife, Gloria, of Scranton; and David A. Cottrell and wife, Nancy, of Throop; her brother, Howard S. Green Jr.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Beverly was preceded in death by her brother, Amos Green.
